In 2015, our Prime Minister had launched Street Lighting National Program
(SLNP) with the aim of replacing conventional street lights with smart and
energy efficient LED street lights across India.
Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) was also launched in 2015 to
promote the use LED-powered appliances in place of normal bulbs and lights. It also spreads the message of how energy efficiency impacts the preservation of the environment on the long run.
Both the schemes are promoted and implemented by Energy Efficiency
Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of Public Sector Undertakings under the Ministry of Power. It helps in replacing traditional street lights with LEDs with the help of its resources (without the help of any municipalities).
LEDs are getting promoted and are considered important in saving energy and
costs due to many reasons. Some of them are:
1. Lifespan of a normal incandescent bulb is around 1,200 hours and LEDs offer a lifespan of around 50,000 – 1,00,000 hours.
2. They operate a lower temperature as compared to other high heating bulbs. They also require low voltage comparatively.
Hence, it is now clear how important LED lights are as they have a lot of advantages on cost and energy fronts and are promoted on a
National level by the Government of India too.
